How discounts work
A discount reduces the original price by a percentage. For example, a 20% discount on a 50 price reduces the price by 10, leaving a sale price of 40. The discount amount is always based on the original price, not the sale price.
Most retail discounts are a single percentage off the original price. That is why this tool focuses on one percentage and a clear sale price. If you have multiple discounts, you can apply them step by step. Use the first discount to compute a new price, then apply the second discount to that new price.
Percentage off formula
The discount calculation is straightforward:
- Discount amount = original price × (discount percent / 100)
- Sale price = original price − discount amount
If you are buying more than one item, the subtotal is the sale price multiplied by the quantity. The tool also calculates total savings so you can see how much you keep across the entire purchase.
Discount vs percentage points
A discount is a percentage of the original price. Percentage points are a difference between two percentages. For example, changing from 20% off to 25% off is a 5 percentage point change. That does not mean the discount increased by 5%. The discount increased by 5 percentage points, which can be a different amount depending on the original price.
This is why it is helpful to compute a dollar value alongside a percentage. The calculator always shows both the percentage and the dollar amount so you can compare them more easily.
Discount before vs after tax
Retailers usually apply sales tax after the discount. That means the tax is calculated on the sale price, not the original price. This calculator follows that common logic when you enable tax. It computes tax on the discounted subtotal and then adds it to the final total.
If your location applies tax before discount, you can still use this tool by treating the original price as the taxed price. That will approximate the total.
Common retail examples
Discounts appear in many common retail settings:
- Seasonal sales like 20% off.
- Clearance events like 50% off.
- Coupon codes that reduce a single item by a set percent.
- Multi item purchases where the discount applies to each unit.
Even small discounts can add up when you buy multiple items. That is why the total savings and final total are just as important as the per item price.
Examples
- 20% off 50
- Original: 50
- Discount: 20%
- Discount amount: 10
- Sale price: 40
- 50% off example
- Original: 80
- Discount: 50%
- Sale price: 40
- Total savings: 40
- 10% off a high price item
- Original: 1,200
- Discount: 10%
- Sale price: 1,080
- Savings: 120
- Three items
- Original: 30
- Discount: 25%
- Quantity: 3
- Sale price: 22.50
- Subtotal: 67.50
- Total savings: 22.50
- Tax included example
- Original: 100
- Discount: 20%
- Quantity: 1
- Tax: 8%
- Sale price: 80
- Tax: 6.40
- Final total: 86.40
- 100% discount example
- Original: 15
- Discount: 100%
- Sale price: 0
- Savings: 15
- High discount (75%)
- Original: 120
- Discount: 75%
- Sale price: 30
- Rounding example
- Original: 39.99
- Discount: 15%
- Sale price: 33.99
- The precise value may be 33.9915, which the calculator rounds based on your precision setting.
- Compare 20% vs 30%
- Original: 50
- 20% off -> 40
- 30% off -> 35
- The extra 10 percentage points saves an additional 5.
- Stack discount explanation
- Original: 100
- First 20% off -> 80
- Then 10% off -> 72
- Total discount is not 30% because the second discount applies to a smaller base.
Using the results responsibly
The calculator provides a clear estimate of sale price and savings. Real receipts may vary because of rounding, local taxes, or store policies. Use the results as a planning guide rather than a final invoice.
If you are comparing two offers, look at the final total, not just the percentage. A smaller percentage on a larger original price can still lead to a bigger savings amount.

FAQ
Is tax applied before or after the discount?
This calculator applies tax after the discount, which is common in retail.
Why does my receipt total differ?
Stores may round differently or apply taxes and fees in a different order.
Can I enter a discount over 100%?
You can, but it may not be valid. The tool will show a warning.
Does this support coupons or stacked discounts?
No. It calculates a single percentage discount only.
How do I calculate two discounts?
Apply the first discount to get a new price, then apply the second discount to that price.
What if the price is zero?
All results will be zero because there is nothing to discount.
Is a 50% discount the same as a 50% increase?
No. A discount is based on the original price, while a price increase is based on the original as well but in the opposite direction.
Can I use this for services?
Yes. The math is the same for any price.
Does quantity affect the discount rate?
No. Quantity only changes the totals, not the per item discount.
Why does the per item price look different after tax?
Tax is applied to the subtotal and then divided across items.
Can I use decimals?
Yes. The calculator accepts decimals for price and discount percent.
Does it round?
You can choose the precision from 0 to 2 decimals.
What if I buy a large quantity?
Quantity is capped at 10,000 to keep calculations fast.
Does this include shipping or fees?
No. Add any extra charges to the original price if you want them included.
Why is my discount amount small?
Lower percentages and low original prices produce smaller discount amounts.
