What this tool does

The Word Count & Text Statistics tool is designed for writers, editors, students, and anyone who needs to measure text quickly. It gives you the essentials in one view: word count, character count, sentence count, paragraph count, and time estimates for reading or speaking the text.

Unlike simple word counters, this tool also explains how each metric is calculated, so you can decide whether the default rules fit your needs. If you are preparing a manuscript, writing content for the web, or working within a specific character limit, these details matter.

Estimates only; formatting/punctuation can affect counts.

How word count is calculated

We use a clear, explainable rule: trim the text, then split by whitespace. That means any sequence of letters or numbers separated by spaces, tabs, or line breaks counts as a word.

Here is what that implies:

  • "One-word" counts as one word.
  • "High-quality" counts as one word (hyphenated words remain intact).
  • "2026" counts as one word because it is separated by spaces.
  • Multiple spaces do not create extra words; the extra whitespace is ignored.

This rule is simple, consistent, and fast. It also aligns with how many writing tools calculate word counts. If you need a more specialized definition (for example, counting hyphenated words separately), treat this as a baseline estimate.

Character counts (with and without spaces)

Character counts come in two forms because different use cases require different rules:

  • With spaces counts every character, including letters, numbers, punctuation, and whitespace. This is helpful for text messages, ads, and fixed-length copy.
  • Without spaces removes all whitespace before counting. This is useful for certain SEO fields or systems that ignore spaces.

The tool shows both counts side by side. You can also toggle which count appears as the primary character number.

Sentences and paragraphs

Sentence and paragraph counts rely on simple heuristics:

  • Sentences are estimated by counting sentence-ending punctuation (., !, ?). Multiple punctuation marks in a row count as one sentence terminator.
  • Paragraphs are counted as non-empty blocks separated by one or more blank lines.

These rules work well for typical prose, but may be less accurate for lists, titles, or technical content. Use them as directional indicators rather than precise measurements.

Reading time and speaking time

Time estimates help you plan how long it will take to read or present your text. We calculate them using words per minute (WPM):

  • Reading time defaults to 200 WPM (a common average for web content).
  • Speaking time defaults to 130 WPM (a typical presentation pace).

You can adjust both sliders to match your audience. For dense technical material, lower the reading speed. For a fast talk or narration, increase the speaking speed.

Examples

Example 1: Short blog post

Text length: 1,000 words

  • Word count: 1,000
  • Character count (with spaces): ~5,700
  • Reading time at 200 WPM: 5 min 0 sec
  • Speaking time at 130 WPM: 7 min 42 sec

Example 2: Newsletter draft

Text length: 650 words, 8 short paragraphs

  • Word count: 650
  • Paragraphs: 8
  • Reading time at 200 WPM: 3 min 15 sec
  • Speaking time at 130 WPM: 5 min 0 sec

Example 3: Longer report

Text length: 2,400 words with dense paragraphs

  • Word count: 2,400
  • Sentences: ~140 (approximate)
  • Reading time at 180 WPM: 13 min 20 sec
  • Speaking time at 120 WPM: 20 min 0 sec
When to use this tool

Use this tool any time you need to measure the scope of a draft, validate a character limit, or estimate reading or speaking time. It is a quick way to size content before editing or publishing.

FAQ

Does the tool store my text?

No. All processing happens locally in your browser.

How are words counted?

We trim the text and split by whitespace, which is simple and consistent.

What about hyphenated words?

Hyphenated terms count as one word using the whitespace rule.

How do you count sentences?

We count occurrences of sentence-ending punctuation (., !, ?).

Can I change the reading speed?

Yes. Use the WPM sliders to adjust reading and speaking speed.

Why are my paragraph counts different?

Paragraphs are counted as non-empty blocks separated by blank lines.
